Subject: October HVAC quoting digest: software is changing; the evidence still matters
Preheader: Platform consolidation, real salary signals and a clearer way to compare proposals.
Edition: October 2026, month-to-date through 20 October.
The month's buyer question
Should you buy a specialist addition or wait for your current platform to provide the feature?
The useful answer starts with the actual gap. If your estimate is sound and schedule entry is repetitive, test a bounded addition. If cost structures, approvals and handoff are fragmented, investigate the underlying workflow before layering another tool onto it.
Platform watch — document intelligence is joining larger suites
Trimble announced an agreement to acquire Document Crunch on 2 April 2026, with financial terms undisclosed. A 9 June 2026 release identifies Document Crunch as a Trimble company and announces a project-level risk platform. Acquisition announcement June release
Buyer implication: ask which capabilities are available in the offered edition now, what is separately licensed and what remains a roadmap. Ownership does not demonstrate that every product in a group shares data or permissions.
Hiring watch — read the tasks, not just the vacancy
LMC Industrial Contractors' public Mechanical and Plumbing Estimator advert lists $80,000–$90,000 a year, depending on experience, alongside drawing review, quantity and cost work, supplier coordination and software use. The posting date is not shown; this is an employer-specific range observed on 20 October, not a national benchmark. Employer advert
Buyer implication: map repetitive preparation separately from judgement and coordination. A vacancy alone does not prove there is an automation budget.
Price watch — licence cost is one part of ownership
Bluebeam's US pricing page displayed $260 Basics, $330 Core, $440 Complete and $590 Max per user/year, billed annually, when checked on 20 October 2026; Max's figure was introductory. Confirm the edition and current terms before purchase. Public pricing
Buyer implication: identify the feature you need, then include training, configuration, data and integration. A cheaper seat is not necessarily a cheaper working process.
Listen with a question in mind
HVAC School's Estimating Tips and Software discusses detailed estimating and its value to production, with Phil Barr's software interest visible. It is an older 2025 episode, retained for fundamentals rather than current product pricing. Episode
Ask your project manager: “What assumptions do you wish the estimate carried into the handover?”
Your next supplier review
- Bring the same unfamiliar bid to each candidate.
- Require source references and a revision example.
- Measure checking and correction time.
- Record what the proposed price excludes.
- Keep an explicit option to improve the current process without buying.
Suggested next step: score evidence and unresolved gaps before selecting a finalist.
Evidence note: this is a month-to-date editorial digest, not a claim that every development occurred in October.
